A Wicked Night at the Theatre

Come have A Wicked Night at the Theatre! This special movie event will include a screening of the hit movie “Wicked” along with other fun activities.

Doors open at 6:00 PM, and in the hour leading up to the movie guests will enjoy one complimentary Wicked-themed drink (one alcoholic and one non) and free popcorn. Special activities during that hour will include trivia, an interactive caption contest, a photo booth, free Wicked-themed bundtinis, and tiaras or wands for everyone.

“Wicked” is the first installment of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name. Set in the Land of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, the film follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with her classmate Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good.

Movie Club: Cinema Paradiso (Free for Members!)

The historic Newtown Theatre will launch a monthly movie club in March. Modeled after a book club, this series will include the screening of a different movie each month followed by audience discussion.

Each film will be introduced by Joe Amodei, president/CEO of Virgil Films & Entertainment. After the movie, Amodei and various special guests will discuss the film with participation from the audience.

The first film in the series will be 1988’s “Cinema Paradiso” on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 PM.

Our special guest on March 5 will be Temple University film professor Irv Slifkin. Slifkin hosts the popular Zoom “Movie Club” videocast and has contributed articles to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Los Angeles Times, and Entertainment Weekly among others. He is also the author of “Filmadelphia: A Celebration of a City’s Movies” and “Groovy Movies: Far-Out Films of the Psychedelic Era,” as well as the writer/co-producer of the documentary “Time Warp: The Greatest Cult Films of All-Time.”

Tickets are available online or at the theatre's box office 30 minutes before the screening. Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and FREE for theatre members (members may simply walk in, no digital ticket needed).

All seating is general admission.

Movie Club: Harold and Maude (Free for Members!)

The next film in the theatre’s monthly Movie Club series will be 1971’s Harold and Maude.

Harold and Maude follows the exploits of Harold Chasen, a young man who is intrigued with death and who rejects the life his detached mother prescribes for him. Harold develops a friendship, and eventual romantic relationship, with 79-year-old Maude, who teaches Harold about the importance of living life to the fullest. The movie incorporates elements of dark humor and existentialist drama.

Each Movie Club film will be introduced by Joe Amodei, President/CEO of Virgil Films & Entertainment. After the movie, Amodei and various special guests will discuss the film with participation from the audience.

The guest for “Harold and Maude” will be Joel Gibbs, host of “Moviemania!” “Everything Entertainment,” and “The Movie Show” – nationally syndicated radio talk shows where listeners across America gather to quench their thirst for everything they love about movies.

Movie Club: City Lights (Free for Members!)

The next film in the theatre’s monthly Movie Club series will be 1931’s City Lights starring Charlie Chaplin.

Charlie Chaplin produced, directed, and starred in City Lights. While the film has no audible dialog, it was released with a synchronized musical score. The story follows the misadventures of Chaplin’s Tramp as he falls in love with a blind girl and develops a turbulent friendship with an alcoholic millionaire. Today, many critics consider it not only the highest accomplishment of Chaplin’s career, but one of the greatest films of all time.
